So far, I believe that the most exciting thing about screen printing is how far it's come and how many options are available to artists at the present. Not only do we have all the old techniques that were first employed when screen printing came about (like simple paper stencils and drawing fluids) but we also have newer means of getting a more complex image onto our screens (like photostencils with photo-emulsion). It’s also really cool that, in addition to the flat, bold and brightly colored look that is so characteristic of screen printing, a painterly feel can now be accomplished (the upside of this is instead of only having one copy of a painting, there are many prints in the edition). Seeing the process Margaret Hunter went through to create Flow-Day was really interesting and helped to drive home the concept that many different styles can be achieved in screen printing. Speaking of Margaret Hunter, the fact that each layer of Flow-Day was shown independently of all the other layers was also a nice touch and I think will help me when it comes to making maps of my own (since I have a little trouble dividing steps up like that). I am not really confused by anything at the moment, probably since I’ve already been exposed a little to all the material in the reading already. I’m basically just really excited.
To me the most exciting thing about learning screen printing is the chance to experiment and expand upon ideas that I have had floating around in my head for awhile. There is a certain quality of layering colors, while still achieving a flat look to the image that I enjoy. I also think that screen printing will provide an excellent layer to a mixed media piece. Screen printing will provide me the opportunity to utilize photographs in creating art, while still being able to manipulate them to fit the needs for the look I am trying to achieve. After studying about the screen printing process in the assigned reading I felt a little more confused than I thought I was going to be, but I’m thinking once I see the process it will make more sense. The part that seemed most confusing was talking about the different chemicals or materials used at different times.
Screen printing seems to be like a very interesting way to create art. It seems like a process that needs a lot of patience and devotion of time in order to produce good results. When it comes to time and patience, I was confused with the fact that the reading says that it is a fast process to produce prints, but really it does not seem to me like a fast process. In addition, even though after going over the assigned reading I have a much better understanding of the process and the techniques used to produce the prints, I believe that I will fully understand when I start producing my own prints. The most troubling area I believe is the part with the stencils, where I am not entirely sure of how to go upon it, and what kind of stencils I should be using. However, I believe that everything will clear in my head in the next couple weeks. Something that I believe is interesting, is the fact that the print is built layer by layer and the artist can see it coming to life step by step. I am eager to go on and start the practical part of the class.
I am most excited about a new technique/method of creating art. I have always had an interest in screen printing and have wanted to learn how to screen print. While reading through the article that was assigned, I too was amazed how far screen printing has developed. I also find it exciting that this will be a new medium, where I am use to using brushes and pencils. However, this could be a challenge because I am not use to the process that used in screen printing. Additionally layering and mapping will be a unique experience that I will have to practice. I agree with the previous comments, that once I begin to practice and master the technique, I will become more confident and comfortable. I am excited though to get started!
The most exciting part about screen printing to me is the number of mixed media options that are available with the craft. I’m pretty familiar with Photoshop and I’m curious to see if the application of screen printing is similar to layers in Photoshop, like the author states. I think it’s exciting that screen printing is applicable and still used in today’s society. I’ve worked in photography a lot, with Photoshop and in the dark room, and after reading about screen printing I find many similarities. Being able to create multiple prints that are each unique is also an interesting aspect of printmaking. I’ve recently become interested in a lot of street artists and this look and feel is definitely prominent in screen printing styles. Although I have made other types of prints like linocuts, I’ve never had the privilege of working in screen printing and I’m a bit confused at first when reading about the technique involved. I know once I dive in and get hands on with the screens and ink that I’ll understand the technique better. I’m very excited to learn how to produce a completely new style of artwork with screen printing.
The most exciting aspect about screen printing to me is most likely split between the experimentation factor and the sheer practicality of the technique. I have never done anything with printmaking quite so elaborate as screen prininting, and I feel that being diverse in your abilities as an artist is one of the most important attributes a person must have when trying to break into a creative career field. Also, as a primarily traditional artist, the prospect of being able to make multiple original copies of the same image is very exciting. This will give me a practical outlet to sell my artwork easily and to a larger audience, since I will be creating multiple original copies of an image as opposed to working dilligently only to produce one final composition. I must admit, however, that I am still extremely confused by the actual process of screen printing, even after having read the selections from the text, particularily when it comes to the different materials we must properly select and how to use them. I am also concerned by the fact that this is going to force me to really pay attention and be as precise and accurate as I possibly can be, and I struggle greatly when it comes to practicing exact processes. I am hoping that once I get the opportunity to start the first project I will begin to be able to confront these areas of concern and really build up my confidence in my ability.
Some of the things that draw me to screen printing are its style and application. Much like printmaking you can mass produce images from one template. What I enjoy about screen printing over print making is that it's a slightly more flexible process and has many more options. You can have big bold, simple, and flat designs, or you can have more detailed, intricate, and fine designs. But what is really cool to me about screen printing is that you can do so much with it! You can screen print on a variety of papers, canvases, clothe, clothes, bags, and pretty much whatever your little heart desires. The possibilities are endless. What excites me about the variety of ways to utilize screen prints is that it transforms the way we experience the piece of art. You can experience it in a gallery, on a t-shirt, online, on a poster, on an article of clothing. Screen printing is a great way to make accessible and portable art as well as a great way to share art. The most confusing part is the process of the actual screen printing. But I think that once I see it demonstrated and try it on my own it will make more sense. Just reading directions I have a very VAGUE idea of how it works. But it’s still sort of gibberish to me.
The most exciting part of screen printing to me is learning a new process of creating art that I have never experienced making before. Going into my junior year of college as a studio major, I have not committed to a medium that I feel most connected to. Personally, I love when my art becomes tangible and functional. It is extremely rewarding when I can create something and I can use it in my everyday life- as a physical object like furniture or a piece that makes my room more beautiful and is aesthetically pleasing. The aspect that is most confusing to me is just the unknown. I have not yet learned this process, other than what I read in our assignment, and to learn something new sometimes takes a little while for me to grasp. I hope that I can successfully follow all of the steps to create a unified and close to perfect result. I am looking forward to learning all the aspects of screen printing and I am ready to face the new challenges that I will face.
For me, the most exciting thing about screen printing is it's ability to be used on a variety of surfaces and it's ability to create limitless different images and textures. I also find it's history really fascinating as well: it can be trailed through the Lascaux caves, ancient China, Europe, and to America. I'm excited about being able to layer and blend colors with this technique to create really vivid, textured works. The most confusing part for me is the process, which seems very complex. Printing as a whole has been difficult for me these past few years, because I have no experience in it. Remember which layer to apply and in which order is going to be a problem for me, I expect. Hopefully, creating the map at the beginning will help me with that. This technique also seems to take a lot of patience and exactness, which I sometimes lack when it comes to making art. I am, however, looking forward to meeting these challenges and overcoming them.
Screen printing is a grand mix of “exciting” and “confusing”. The possibilities, especially after I completed the reading, make me want to immediately jump into the middle of it all. I’d like to try layering different colors and images just to see what would happen. Artists have created truly unique and fascinating pieces by using screen printing and I am eager to do the same. I look forward to seeing how the digital world works with screen printing. I like the idea of art and technology working together. I wonder about the different techniques and how exactly they will work. Unfortunately I have almost no experience in screen printing. I have a lot to learn. It’s a bit overwhelming trying to absorb all of this new information.
I think the most exciting thing about screen printing is how it utilizes ideas that even the earliest of humans though of. The idea that something as simple as a stencil can create such complex and beautiful images is astounding to me. I'm excited to get to create these things. I am nervous because of all the meticulous work that goes into screen printing. I am nervous I will screw up but I am also excited to make whatever screw up into something even more beautiful.
