3.1- I define community as a unified group of people all having a commonality- whether it’s defined by where they live, the activities they chose to do (socially or even religiously), people sharing culture or history. I have been a part and still am active in many different communities, some of which are intertwined. For instance, I am a part of the Rollins Community, which led me to be a part of the Fraternity/ Sorority life community, which led me to be a part of the Residential Life community. For me it was easy to become a part of a community after I had become a part of another. I also believe that if you consider yourself a part of a community it is important to be an active member to improve your community, and help it grow and flourish. 3.2- In my ideal learning environment I would hope to contribute in making a public place more beautiful, functional and inviting. Whether that means planting flowers and painting walls in a public park to make it a place where people are proud to go to and feel an obligation to maintain it. I can look back to two service-learning projects that I completed during my first year. The first was a for summer orientation where our group went to Fern Creek Elementary and helped make the school a more beautiful and inviting environment for the underprivileged kids who attend that school. We painted a mural, we decorated classrooms and the cafeteria, painting the sidewalks and walls- did as much as we could to help this community. Another service project I did was with my RCC, and we went to the Genius Reserve, helped plant plants, and did upkeep to the area. Both these projects that I was involved with have a similar goal that my ideal learning environment had, the challenge that rises is that a lot of the time people don’t consider “beautifying” something as helpful, just a façade that is created- but I believe that if one is proud of their own community or environment, then they strive to defend and protect it and upkeep it and more positive aspects arise from this new found love of their community. 3.3- I am a half Brazilian and half American female who is a semi-practicing Catholic. I consider myself strong physically, mentally and emotionally. My family and I would be in the upper-middle class. I am 20 years old and am tall and slender, I am straight and am in a serious relationship with my boyfriend. A source of strength for me would have to be the close relationship I have with my parents, I am an only child, which gave me so many opportunities. A difficulty for me growing up would have to be the fact that I was constantly moving, and changing schools- once I became a part of a community, I often had to leave it and move and start the whole process over. Being an only child meant that I never had a sibling, until I went to an all girls high school where suddenly I had 60 “sisters.” When I came to Rollins I knew that I wanted to be a part of a sorority which would mean I would have a whole new group of sisters/ community. 3.4- I believe that the assistant chief of police waned the religious images be painted over because he did not want to make others who did not have the same religious devotion to feel segregated. I believe that even though someone may not share the same ideals with the religious mural, they should not immediately feel like they were left out or segregated. There was a positive good intention from the mural and the assistant should have realized that before not accepting the images. Well the “I” was what the students wanted individually in the mural because they had spent time on it and the “we” still was the mural but with the knowledge that it was for the whole community and all aspects can be included and that they should make it better than before. The thing that was missing in the ALPS was the fact that maybe not everyone would appreciate or understand the underlying message in the mural.
I emailed you my entire blog response, because it could not fit!!
3.1. I would define community as a group of people that are interacting with each other, have similar interests and sometimes common goals. I believe I am part of a few communities, such as the water ski community in my country, the world, and even rollins. 3.2. In my ideal learning environment, I like to get first hand experience on the on what is being taught, such as in art, where we get to draw and create sculpture, I like to have a supportive environment but a t the same time room for me to struggle over something and thus figure it out on my own as this way it will get imprinted in my mind. In the service learning activity I see my self getting the guidance and support that I will need, and after that struggling on my own or with partners to figure out how and what we are going to do or create. 3.3. I am white male, that grew up in a Greek orthodox environment. I believe I have all three abilities, and I am 21 years old. I have white skin, and dark hair and eyes, and I am attracted to females. I believe that a source of strength while growing up is the greek environment, which is very different and from any other, and the people that have been surrounding me during my life. Also the fact that I am interested in women has made it easier, as the other way would not be such a smooth path because of the greek way of thinking. My culture and my character made it tuff for me to get used to the American way of life and communication, but now I believe I have adapted and I will have a smooth path with the service learning activity.
3.1. I would define community as a collection of individuals who have consciously or unconsciously come together to experience life as a collective. I don't believe that a community needs to be "official" or "organized". A group of friends can be a community. Like the other posters before me, Rollins can also be considered a community, with smaller, tighter knit ones existing within itself as well. Every time I am with a group of individuals with who I feel connected to, I am involved in a community. 3.2- In my ideal learning environment I would have the effortless ability to float back and forth between interacting and creating with others and being able to go off and work through things on my own. I am the type of person who is not 100% dependent on people but I am not content with being 100% alone. A mixture is needed for me to learn something fully. In the service learning activity, I would like to be able to brainstorm on my own and then come together with partners to express all of our thoughts, and then be able to try to create some things on our own and then come together again to help each other out. I was involved in a printmaking serve learning project with children last semester and it was very rewarding but still a struggle for me because I felt like the kids needed me to be constantly present. However, I probably could have let go a little more and they would have been fine. 3.3 I am a 21 year old white female who is decently mentally, physically and emotionally strong. I have green eyes and dishwater hair. I am asexual and I don't identify with any religion. I think my biggest struggle to date is dealing with the fact that I can be a worrywart and on the other hand I can be kind of insanely reckless. I'm working on finding a balance. I think my biggest strength is that I am open-minded and enjoy learning new things (even if I do worry about it) and that has also allowed me to fit in pretty well with the university.
I have no idea why the assistant chief of police did what he did. There are so many factors to this. Many he was religious as well and did not connect or approve of the figures in the mural. Maybe he was not religious and thought it would be more politically correct to leave of these to not risk alienating anyone or he did not want the mural to make a religious statement. I think the artists responded appropriately. They kept to their original vision but not in a vindictive or ridiculous sort of way. They used their anger and emotions to their advantage and used them in a creative and productive way. They dialogued and peacefully went to a middle man. The I and We are intersecting with common interests or goals. For example I feel very strongly about travel and studying abroad because I believe it’s a great character building experience as well as a great way to learn and mature. I also think that it is a good way to develop leadership skills. As a member of Pinehurst, one of our goals is promoting diversity and we are a community of leaders. There are multiple I’s and We’s in the mural example. The I’s range from individual artists, students, and the assistant chief of police. The we’s range from the students, artists, the coalition, and the police department. Then there is the community as well. I’m not sure if you can ever anticipate these sort of matters that come up. I think staying true to your message and artist voice is more important than caving to authority when the authority is not in the clear right. But as said in the reading keeping the police department included on initial discussion and keeping progress reports with them would have been better. Consciousness of self – Realizing what goals and desires of the group are and what direction it is headed in. Then again in relating the to “at promise youth” and having the students write journal entries. Congruence – Comparing the different clubs and options to commit to. Then relating to the at promise students and Latin culture. Commitment – The group making a consensus on creating a mural and committing to the project. They then organized the details of the project and began assigning responsibilities. Collaboration – When members of the group realized what skills they had to offer in the project and then collabrotated with each other, the at promise students, and LFSC. Controversy – The assistant chief wanting the group to paint over religious figures. Citizenship – The students were engaging with the community in place and creating the mural specific to the culture. I know from this situation that I can have my own artistic input and aesthetics involved in the creative process but I am not the only person involved. Communicating is vital with my community partner. There should be collaboration and healthy levels of communication. It is also I portant that you support the group you are engaging with and that you clearly understand what it is that they are trying to accomplish. You also need to keep their needs and wants in mind when planning.
