Reading Response for Inspiration, Due Thursday, Sept. 13th

What are some of the ways artists become inspired to make work? Of the artists you looked at on Art 21, which one(s) made work that really revolved around a process of research, development and/or experimentation?

Artists are inspired by their experiences, emotions, and the world around them. The artists interviewed in the reading were inspired by all of these things. William Kentridge's work seems to be a process of research, development, and experimentation. Kentridge explores global issues of racial inequality as well as his personal emotional struggles and expresses his ideas through animated films.

Artists become inspired to make work from almost anything, it can be political, personal, or anything you see in the world. Many artists seem to be motivated by personal experience like Marina Abramovic from her childhood filled with pain. An-My LĂȘ’s work really revolves around her research and development. Each piece she starts with images of war that she recalls from her childhood that she then juxtaposes with a contemporary landscape. So first she researches actual natural landscapes and then fueled by her past experiences forms her basic research.

Inspiration is a funny thing. No two people are inspired by the same motivating factors. I believe the one thing that remains unanimous throughout any artist's body of work is an obvious conveyance of emotion. Inspiration is a thought provoking feeling; you're inspired by what makes you feel and you think your individualized thoughts based on that. In Jan Harrison's case, animals incite such a process within. I strongly admire her source of inspiration as I notice more and more each day how truly animalistic human beings turn out to be. If we were to not group ourselves out separately from "animals", we could say Harrison is inspired simply by life. She is wise enough to recognize the value and provocative beauty in one beyond that of her fellow humans.
